An All Yards Art Show about playing with #yardworkFor the 7th annual Art Week Des Moines, you are invited to participate in a city-wide art installation. Design your #yardwork installation with materials you have handy at home. Coordinate with your neighborhood on a theme, or surprise everyone with your own vision. You could even use your yard as a performance space. With lots of yards participating, the Greater Des Moines area will be transformed into DSM Emerald City. Driving, walking and biking through neighborhoods will provide unexpected surprises from a safe, social distance. This project was initiated by local artists Rachel Buse and Christopher Chivetta. Both are sculptors interested in working outside and use material and color to explore meaningful interactions with people. To participate, read #yardwork guidelines below. #YARDWORK GUIDELINES
WHAT IS A YARD? Taking care of a yard is a strong tradition in the midwest. It's the facade of many homes, sometimes adorned with symbols telling about who lives there. Does a yard need to be outside of a house? Could your yard be your front door or a common space in your apartment building? Could your yard be in a digital space? Is your yard in Animal Crossing? DSM Emerald City wants to see many versions of yards represented in our all yards art show for #artweekdsm2020.
WEATHER If your yard is outside, secure your installation incase of strong winds. Use materials that can withstand rain.
PERFORMANCES What if you used your yard as a performance space? Would you read poetry? Stage a play with your household? Play an instrument? When you submit a description of your yard performance, let us know when you plan to perform and where people will be able to tune in if broadcasting live. If you plan to play music, be considerate and check with your neighbors about noise.
IS THIS PROJECT ABOUT THE WIZARD OF OZ? Not exactly. The name is to inspire the idea of transforming neighborhoods with imagination through art. We can't wait to see what pops up in yards and make us feel like, maybe we're not in Iowa anymore. Choose your own themes. What messages do we need in our communities right now? What do you want to say with your yard space?
HOW DO I PARTICIPATE? DSM Emerald City All Yards Art Show is open to all, even our art friends in Ames! Plan for your yard project to be completed and on view from Friday June 18th - Friday June 25th. Share on social media a description of what you your installation is and post a photo or two. We will share your contribution on instagram at @dsmemeraldcity. When you share on social media about your contribution, please tag @dsmemeraldcity and use the hashtags #dsmemeraldcity #artweekdsm2021 so others can discover who else in participating. WHAT IS ART WEEK? Art Week Des Moines encourages artists and arts supporters to organize events that celebrate Central Iowa's amazing art community. The goal is to provide rich programming throughout the week to reach across generations and across art genres. Art Week Des Moines is a volunteer-based effort, open to all artists wanting to showcase their work among the diverse offering of creative expression growing in Des Moines.
